An Innovative Veena Recital by Vidhushi Shanthi Rao
Saturday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Jubilee Hall, Raffles Hotel

The South Indian veena is one of the most ancient musical instruments of the world. It is associated with the Indian Goddess of learning, Saraswati. The instrument itself is a beautiful work of art, capable of producing a range of sounds, and graceful embellishments. Unfortunately, the art of veena playing is a declining one with very proficient artistes active on the concert scene.

Vidhushi Shanti Rao is a highly accomplished and innovative exponent of the veena.  She has learnt under veena maestros such as the late Chitti Babu and R K Suryanarayana as well as vocal stalwarts such as the veteran R K Srikantan. She has given numerous performances all over India, including most of the highly prestigious organizers in major cities, as well as in several countries across the world. She has been decorated with many titles and awards, has released many recordings, and has trained many cohorts of veena students at her institution in Bengaluru, Veenavani Centre for music.

The program for SIFAS is planned in two parts.  The first part will be a classical Carnatic veena concert with items from the traditional repertoire accompanied by a veteran mridangam artiste, T A S Mani of Bengaluru and ghatam/kanjira by local artistes. The second part will be an innovative East-West collaboration with local musicians playing western instruments such as the bass guitar, saxophone and keyboard.

The program is planned to last 90 minutes without an intermission.

Excerpts from reviews:

Shanti Rao from Bangalore is one of the pioneers in this field as she maintains the speed, the glides 'sruti' with extraordinary care. The Hindu, Chennai

Her brevity of expression and subtle ideas had a special appeal to the initiated. Her recital greatly transcended the usual levels of a Veena concert. The New Indian Express, Chennai

SIFAS Alumni: Krishna Bharatham

Memories from Krishna Bharatham, our last Dance production which took stage at the Esplanade, Singapore on 8 April 2012.

Parasparam is very important to me. Even in relation to trees. In observing the child ( I believe he was referring to the dancers) their faces bloom a different way when we melt their hearts. (wow!)
Sometimes you forget why you are an artist. What is your duty as an artist? And it’s a journey. Just need to remind you not to hurt anyone. That will remain in your dance-- Sheejith Krishna
Living outside India and having that connection to your culture is a satisfying experience. I feel fulfilled. And it goes beyond learning and this experience with Krishna BhAratham. I now can’t see my life without dance. It has gone beyond being a hobby to now becoming a serious part of my life.
Sifas is like home to many of us.
We have been learning at this institute since a young age and have seen many great teachers come and go. However, life-long friendships are fostered in SIFAS and such productions are a way for us to catch up and grow as artistes--Jivanaah

Unlike the human actors in the scene, Krishna can see beyond temporal and material realms, but in no way does this vision allow him to step back, or to be a mere spectator. Vyasa's Sri Krishna is one whose participation is integral to the action.  He is a vital presence whose intervention allows Dharma to ultimately prevail.--Sheejith Krishna

Archiving Memories

The hype is slowly building up and we are very excited about our upcoming production. A good time to be archiving memories as this busy period slowly leads up to the GSS production itself.

As we believe that you too may enjoy hearing more news from behind the scenes, we have compiled a series of interviews with some of our members and well wishers. Please visit our production blog at SIFAS Alumni Orchestra for more stories. You may like to subscribe to its mailing list should you wish to receive these updates directly into your Inbox.

As the first in a series of short email interviews, it was a pleasure to chat with Deneshwari, whose recent video interview is now available on the GSS Facebook Event page.

Our Members

Deneshwari is one of our SIFAS Alumni Orchestra's Strings section in-charge persons ("IC") & is presently involved in our upcoming production, GSS. She is also a member of the SIFAS Alumni Music Sub-Committee. Together with Shreya Gopi, Deneshwari has shared some details about her scope of work as IC in their joint video interview. Let's get to know the individual behind the role.

"Spending so much time together has really brought us together such that these days if rehearsal is set to start at 7 I usually try my best to come in way earlier than that like at 6 perhaps..it doesn't feel like I am making a great effort for that..it's really something I want to do. that's all. :)"

To read the rest of Denesh's interview, please visit our production blog at SIFAS Alumni Orchestra.
