Chennai for the Season

According to the Lonely Planet (also known as The Guidebook for people who want to go somewhere but cannot), Chennai is not a tourists' paradise. According to the author, you would

...be pretty hard pressed to find much to gush about when it comes to Chennai. The streets are clogged with traffic, the weather oppressively hot, the air heavy with smog, and sights of any interest are uncooperatively thin on the ground. Even the movie stars, as one Chennaiite put it, are 'not that hot'.

Quoted from the Lonely Planet's Chennai page. Check it out!

Yep, as Anita says, Chennai is the "Detroit of India", with a secret so big that it's all over Chennai and nowhere to be seen at the same time. The Lonely Planet is not in on it!

The December Season, as we call it, overflowing with (some say too many) concerts and events and lecture-demonstrations throughout the month of December, is an amazing thing. Hundreds of concerts over the span of a month. Music is in the air. Nobody would look twice if a random, otherwise normal-looking person were to contort his or her hands and face in public (singing an imaginary RTP, or re-enacting some of the more "physical" singers' mannerisms).

Everywhere, you can see traces of it, from inter-Sabha buses to traditional clothes, to Kutcheri crawls (!), to Sabha canteen ratings; I've heard the Narada Gana Sabha is famous for other reasons than music alone. The Singaporean in me is looking forward to the food as well! It is almost a hidden festival; while the rest of Chennai goes on with its business, there is a festival going on that may well be more famous outside India than within. There are websites detailing everything about concerts from locations to artists, like kutcheris.com! They've even listed the SIFAS week-long programme in Chennai in detail, including things like information on the performers (Yes. I admit that I searched for my own name and found my concert listing! Talk about pressure!).

Seeing things like the kutcheris website and being a part of Sifas' second-ever foray into the Chennai music scene in December is a reminder that there is a world of music out there, bigger and livelier and also much more intimidating than the place we've come to call our artistic home. Every day, there are at least three dozen concerts going on: of those on the way to stardom, those who've made it, those who perform for lofty reasons, those who perform for those who listen, and anyone else who can shimmy their way (by hook or other means) into a slot at any sabha. You will miss more concerts than you can hope to attend.

Personally, it has been a gradual process, from finalising my concert list, learning and rehearsing what I have to perform, to getting everything pieced together, to overcoming minor illnesses along the way to concert readiness. The Sifas March festival is no less important an event to me than this December season, but for one aspect. Learning from masters and virtuoso performers, seeing so many of them in action in such a short, focused span of time really stretches your knowledge in a way that no Sangeethapriya/Youtube-spamming can ever match. Rare books, audio recordings, compositions and such are much more easily accessed there. The internet helps, no doubt, but it cannot replace the actual (some would say visceral) experience of art. Great art always leaves one in awe, with a gap in your mind where comprehension and knowing used to be. Many performers will be in pursuit of that awe, that gap in mind-space.

And now, me and my fellow students and alumni of SIFAS who are performing in Chennai have joined the ranks of participants, from being mere rasikas. There are youth slots in sabhas like the Music Academy, and you do get an idea of where you stand, in a global sense. We are small fish, swimming in an ocean of music. Awe is appropriate.

SIFAS Alumni: 2011

2011 was a wonderful year for the SIFAS ALUMNI.

The present committee took its reins on 28 May 2011, the last saturday of May, which now appears to be the approximate date fixed for our annual AGM and bi-annual Elections. Further to having an active committee on board, we have also enjoyed the formation of the sub-committees which are slowly gaining their own presence. Especially inspiring have been the efforts of the Music and Dance sub-Committees.

Alumni Orchestra

On the music side,we have now formed an active Alumni Orchestra under the guidance of our conductor Rajandra anna. Practices are regularly held at the SIFAS premises on Sundays at 11 a.m. The Alumni Orchestra's debut performance was at this year's SIFAS Academy Day. We are next scheduled to perform at the SIFAS Auditorium on 1 April 2012, Sunday morning as part of the SIFAS Music and Dance Festival 2012.

Mudivil Oru Arambam

Greetings!

A quick background

Considering that most of us live lives of relative comfort, and are able to exercise choices and make decisions, it is not often that we stop to reflect on some of the simple things that enrich our daily life: food, water, literacy, work, essential commodities, etc.

But for a great many number of people around the world, these simple things are not so simple. In very many cases, it is a daily uphill struggle as many try desperately – and quite often, unsuccessfully – to include these basics into their lives. Poverty, hunger and lack of education trap them in a vicious grip leading to desperate lives with little hope of betterment.

The ones to suffer the most on account of these unfortunate circumstances are children. Trapped into this frightening cycle, they miss out on good nutrition and education, which bars them to a large extent from any opportunity they may have for a better life, and to contribute meaningfully as healthy, literate citizens.

Fortunately, there are many caring individuals and organisations working to elevate the lot of these unfortunate youngsters. These individuals and groups work as hard as they can to reach out in whatever way to ensure that these children have a fair chance of transforming themselves into the contributing citizens of tomorrow.

Action Aid

One such organisation which has been extremely effective at dealing with the enormous issues of poverty and illiteracy is Action Aid. An international organisation with a presence in over forty countries, Action Aid has been operating in India for almost forty years (since 1972). Today, through its partner NGOs and community-based organisations, Action Aid reaches out to more than 5 million people, supporting them in their right to have access to food, shelter, work, education, healthcare and security.

Our project, An Iota: That’s All It Takes, a global initiative

To support Action Aid in their laudable efforts, we are organising a performance of the dance production Mudivil Oru Aarambam at kalakshetra ,Chennai on January 1st 2012 For this, we are initiating a novel project, ‘An Iota: That’s All It Takes’ to collect funds whereby you could donate Rs. 10 (Rupees Ten only) per head which will be donated entirely to Action Aid in their efforts to eradicate poverty and provide education.
We intend publicising this event all over the world, whereby we are requesting people from specific regions to contribute ten units of their local currency towards this cause i.e. Euros 10 in Europe, GBP 10 in Great Britain, S$ 10 in Singapore, etc.
Note: The theme for the event, Iota, is derived from the Greek alphabet iota, which is the symbol for the number ten in the Greek system of numerals. It has been chosen to indicate how little we need to give of ourselves individually to make a collective contribution to our society.

We look forward to your help in publicising this within your own community and contact base so that we can try and raise as much funds and publicity for Action Aid in their excellent work.

If you require any further details, please feel free to contact us on email HYPERLINK "mailto:shyamjithkiran.1@gmail.com" shyamjithkiran.1@gmail.com.

Alumni Sub Committees

Dear Alumni,

You will be pleased to know that further to the election of the Alumni Committee, we are also forming sub- committees for these following groups:

Music
Dance
Publicity
Logistics (under the Events manager); and
Communications/Editorial (under the Editor).

These sub-committees are created in anticipation of productions lined up for the next year. Each IC on the Committee will act as a representative of these sub-committee and liase between the Committee and the respective sub-committees. We invite all members to volunteer for those sub-committees of their interest. This is on an entirely voluntary basis and you would be working closely with the Committee and members.

Update: The Music Sub-Committee is almost formed and we intend to have three music-chairs on the music sub-committee, for vocal, instruments and percussion.

We are proud to present our three music chairs:

Mrs Premalatha Naidu will be our Music-Chair (Vocal);
Mr V Rajandra will be our Music-Chair (Instruments); and
Mr Thulasi Das will be our Music-Chair (Percussion).

We thank them in advance and look forward to working together under their guidance.

Please drop us an email at sifasalumni@gmail.com to let us know if you would also like to be more directly involved in the planning of music events for the Alumni.

Do watch this space for more information on the other sub-committees. The Dance and Editorial sub-committees are also a work in progress at the moment and looking for volunteers. Do contact us if these are your areas of interest and you believe you can contribute your time and ideas.

yours faithfully,

the SIFAS ALUMNI Committee

Budding Alumni Writers

Dear Alumni and friends,

As you all know, the Alumni recently performed at this year's SIFAS Music and Dance festival on 19 March 2011, Saturday.

We are pleased to invite those who attended the event to submit an article reviewing the performance. Naturally, we would require these articles to be from objective and therefore from someone who didnt perform that night.

The shortlisted review will be printed in the upcoming SIFAS post while the other reviews will be posted on our Blog.

We look forward to hearing from you soon. The deadline for articles is Friday 20 April 2011.

Please revert by email to our editor Ms Poorna Menon by emailing us at sifasalumni@gmail.com.

You may also wish to write to her if you enjoy writing and wish to become part of her editorial sub-committee, which amongst other things is in charge of submitting articles for the SIFAS POST and maintains the Blog.
